Nudibranch Jason mirabilis, c.1990
A series of six photos taken by Phil while scuba diving off Wellington's south coast in the early 1990s are currently showing at Photospace Gallery, 37 Courtenay Place, until 8th April.
The Cibachrome prints, made by Phil's good friend Eion Jury, are for sale at the gallery.
(Normal gallery commission of one-third plus GST will be retained, the rest of the money from any sales will go to Phil, as with any other exhibitors' work.)
The prints are one-off and no more will be available. They are $330 each, mounted, but not including the frames (which have been loaned for the show).

auction update, 1/12/2012
Well, last night's live auction for the Phil Jacobs Benefit was a great success. There was a good mood in the room and the bidding was lively. We're not posting any sales figure just yet, as we're only at the halfway stage.
The live auction of 68 lots took around two hours, which was pushing the attention span (and wallets) of the bidders. So we made the right decision to not try to auction all the lots (well over a hundred) in one night. If you didn't see your donation in the live auction catalogue, it will be coming up.
You will see many items appearing on TradeMe over the next fortnight, and there will be an online catalogue of these lots as soon as we can prepare it.
We would like to thank our auctioneer Craig Griffiths, who did a fantastic job of getting the best prices and also kept everyone engaged and entertained. He gave his time and professional expertise for free.
And thank you everyone who turned up and bid. You have done a great deal to make the auction successful in supporting Phil.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO HELP PHIL

Phil Jacobs in his Petone workshop - photo by Reg Feuz
For more than thirty years Phil Jacobs has been Wellington’s preeminent camera repair technician. Almost every photographer who has worked in this city will have used his services at some time or another, and in an indirect but important way he has made a significant contribution to photography as an art form, a business, and a means of personal and social expression.
Sadly, Phil is now seriously ill. He has had to cease work and we understand that his life expectancy is limited. This has put him and his family under major financial pressure.
We are holding a photography auction as a benefit for Phil and his family. The date for the benefit auction is Friday, 30th November, and Massey University has generously made available the lecture theatre and surrounds in its new College of Fine Arts Building. There will be a preview event on Monday 26th November at Photospace Gallery, with viewing over the next few days.
We now have plenty of generously donated photographs and other item for the benefit auction. What we really need is for you and your family and friends to come to the auction on Friday 30th November and BUY THE PHOTOS. You will be supporting someone who in his own way has played an important part in our creative and professional lives over several decades.
Thank you
James Gilberd, Mark Beehre, John Williams
